London College of Fashion Embroidered Hands Cushion
Created as part of a collaborative project with students from the Fashion Illustration course at the London College of Fashion, the hands cushion is one of our stitchers' favourites. The vibrant colours and intricate individual stitching, all part of our Accredited Training programme, allows the stitchers creative freedom.
Laura Avey was the winning designer with her illustration of hand prints inspired by the theme ‘release’. Fine Cell Work worked with Laura to create this embroidered cushion made with a high quality natural coloured linen.
Each cushion is screen printed to provide a framework for the stitchers to work from. The end result is a unique, one-of-a kind cushion, sure to be a talking point and the perfect accent for your sofa or bed.

Our production process
Each of our products goes on a long and impactful journey before it is ready to be sold. And every one of our items touches the life of at least one prisoner or prison leaver in some way.
Our needlework kits are put together in our prison workshops before being distributed from our London hub to our wonderful volunteers. These inspirational supporters teach people in prison the necessary skills to craft each piece. The completed stitchwork is then returned to us, to ensure it meets our exacting standards, before finally being sent back into a prison to be 'made up', turning it into the final product (e.g. stuffing and adding zips to cushions).
In total, this process can take up to 200 hours and over 70,000 stitches (per piece!)
We know that every single one of our products boosts self-esteem, builds confidence, has a positive impact on a stitcher’s mental health, and gives them the opportunity to transform their lives.
By purchasing a product, you become a part of that journey.
Over 25 years of transformation
Rehabilitating over 8,000 prisoners
Supported by esteemed designers to create one-of-a-kind, limited edition products
Breaking the cycle
We help break the devastating cycle of reoffending and repeated imprisonment
Support our work
Provides a prisoner with the materials for one tapestry cushion (100 hours of creative activity).
Will enable us to continue providing paid, creative and productive work to even more prisoners around the UK, helping them to build a brighter future.
Sponsors a prisoner to train as a volunteer 'class coordinator', teaching and mentoring other prisoners.
Covers the volunteer costs of a stitching class in prison.
Pays for the training, materials and support for one prisoner for an entire year, helping them to rebuild a meaningful, independent,crime-free life.
By giving prisoners hope that transformation is truly possible, they can envision a meaningful life after release. But nobody tells the story of how Fine Cell Work has helped them better than the prisoners themselves:“Stitching allows me to use a totally different part of my brain and personality. I can move away from the more difficult reflections and anxieties and feel creative and purposeful. This means I no longer feel that my life has come to a halt and that I am of no use to anyone else.”

I love every purchase from Fine Cell Work, they are truly unique and a testament to the stitcher. I have wanted to buy one of the Hands cushions since I first saw them- but they were always out of stock. Thank you to my stitcher for finishing one before Christmas - i love it. Adds to my growing collection from this amazing organisation.
I now have a pair of Embroidered Hands cushions and I love them. Subtly different as they were not embroidered by the same person. This makes them charmingly unique and I could not be happier with my cushions. They are much admired and I always sing the praises of Fine Cell Work - a very commendable organisation.
All lovely products and great to gift. Very happy and supporting a great cause. highly recommended.
I had just returned home from surgery when my package arrived. When I opened the box and found a lavender sachet and hands cushion that were even lovelier than I had expected, it brightened my day and really my whole recovery. The quality is exceptional and I would recommend Fine Cell Work to everyone. I smile each time I look at these items. Thank you.
I am so very pleased with the cushion! It sits on the chair I use everyday and I love the graphics of hands in fabulous uplifting shades of your amazing hand stitching. Its taken me ages to get this cushion as it keeps selling out but now I have ONE, thank you so much. This is such a wonderful and creative team effort you all do, I hope you get as much pleasure in stitching the cushions and other wonderful things you make as we all do when we receive them.
