Sharing festive joy at the apprentice Christmas lunch
One of the highlights of the Fine Cell Work calendar is the annual apprentice Christmas lunch. It’s a very special occasion where apprentices and graduates from our post-release Open The Gate programme, along with staff and volunteers, all gather together to share food and play games.
The office is adorned with lovingly handmade Christmas decorations, made by apprentices and staff at craft club, desks are put away and tables are set for lunch, which is cooked by Fine Cell Work staff. It’s a real team effort that really brings home the importance of what we do.
Ron, a current Open The Gate apprentice, tells us how much he enjoyed this year’s lunch:
“The lunch today was exceptional – all the staff did a fantastic job with the cooking! It’s a great community spirit – it’s like being with a long-lost family. When your family isn’t around, you can become part of the family here, it’s great. It’s friendly – we’ve had a chat and a laugh, which is what it is all about. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it!”
Throughout the lunch, stories and jokes were shared, along with some incredibly impressive recent stitching projects! After dinner, we all played games together, which included a Fine Cell Work themed crossword!
The lunch was also enjoyed by staff and volunteers:
“It was so amazing to see how many apprentices and graduates have come back to celebrate with us. Even though many have graduated, they are drawn to Fine Cell Work – they want to see each other and still be part of the story. The staff made such an effort to decorate and cook and make it a special occasion for everyone. It was wonderful!”
~ Antonia, Fine Cell Work Volunteer
“As the new Engagement and Support officer, this was my first apprentice and graduate Christmas lunch. I had heard big things and I was not disappointed! I was blown away by the day. Christmas is a challenging time for many, but the highlight for me was how many apprentices and graduates persevered despite various setbacks, to make it to the lunch. It was a reminder of the strength and care of the community we have created on Open The Gate, and that's what this season is really all about!”
~ Callie, Fine Cell Work Engagement and Support Officer
The overarching feeling every year at this event is the sense of community that is felt by all. Christmas can be a hard time for those in prison, but it can also be challenging for those who have been released, and together, we are able to share a sense of hope and optimism for the future.
