This exquisitely fierce animaux lioness cushion is an advanced embroidery piece using crewel wool and stranded cotton on cream boiled wool.
The cushion features a lioness in a full red skirt inspired by caricaturist J.J. Grandville's illustration for Scènes de la Vie Privée et Publique des Animaux, in which celebrated writers of the 1840s such as Honoré de Balzac reveal anthropomorphic animals exemplifying and satirising human behaviour.

A beautiful, excellently crafted cushion. There is humour in the expression on the lioness' face, and she looks very much like a school teacher demanding you sit down, and relax on this wonderful item.
