Fine Cell Work

New Patron and Chair
Fine Cell Work is delighted to announce the appointment of a new Patron, Libby Purves OBE, and new Chair, Jean Gomm
Fine Cell Work is an inspiring and totally original social enterprise teaching prison inmates to do top quality, professional needlework. A total of 340 prisoners in English and Scottish prisons do fine cell work and they are now working for such prestigious organisations as English Heritage and the V & A.
The charity’s respective appointments of Libby Purves and Jean Gomm will bring a mix of high level communication and business skills to an inspiring social enterprise which is aiming to train and employ eight hundred more prisoners over 2010-13, and hoping to light a torch for ever wider acceptance amongst the general public and in government for its rehabilitation model so that it can eventually be rolled out in twice as many prisons across the country.
Libby Purves OBE is a radio presenter, journalist and author. A diplomat's daughter, she won a scholarship to St Anne's College, Oxford. In 1976, at the age of 28, she joined Brian Redhead on the BBC's Today programme, becoming the show's first female presenter. She currently presents Midweek on BBC Radio 4 and the education programme The Learning Curve. Purves also writes a column for The Times newspaper. She was named columnist of the year in 1999 and in the same year was appointed an OBE for services to journalism. She has written a series of books on childcare, eleven novels including Mother Country, and a travel book, One Summer's Grace, about a 1700-mile sailing journey round Britain with children aged three and five.
Jean Gomm has extensive senior executive experience in the corporate sector, international organisations and non-profit organisations. She has over 25 years of senior level strategy and development responsibilities at the OECD in Paris and is also experienced in small company management, particularly in the creative industries, and is a Director of T. Gosling Ltd and Chair of Maggie and Rose Ltd. She is the President of the Harvard Business School Alumni Club of London; a Trustee of the British Friends of Harvard Business School and the Ealing Community Resource Centre; and a member of the Development Committees of the Microloan Foundation’s Micro-venture Committee and Rights and Humanity.
Founder Lady Anne Tree will remain at the helm of the charity and is to assume the role of President.

Dover Castle Commission
Fine Cell Work is now working on a major commission for English
Heritage’s refurbishment of Dover Castle, one of the largest castles
in the country. The castle is being redecorated in authentic
12th-century style, with artefacts specially made for the project.
Fine Cell Work’s commission is for the designing and stitching of 47
cushions in silk, linen and hessian, using the motifs and materials of
the 12th century.
The cushions – including cushions for the King’s throne – will be
stitched by prison inmates working for and with Fine Cell Work, as
part of their rehabilitation.
Once the refurbished castle is reopened, ex-prisoners and the families
of prisoners will be able to see this glorious work on public
display. We are EXTREMELY excited about this commission and so are our stitchers!

TAPESTRY FINISHING AND CUSHION MAKING SERVICE
Have you ever been given a tapestry or needlepoint kit as a gift, or bought one yourself only to start it but stop half or even a quarter of the way through? If this sounds like a familiar scenario then our tapestry finishing service might just prove of interest to you.
Our stitchers love working on our designs but they also enjoy seeing something different from time to time and in particular the challenge of successfully completing something that has already been started.
One of stitchers HMP Kingston recently completed a tapestry featuring Zarafa, the giraffe who was led from Egypt to Paris in the 17th century. He was absolutely delighted to have been given the project, and we sent him the story of the animal's amazing voyage, so he could understand the backdrop to the wonderful scene he was stitching. It was completed in record time and the tapestry looked amazing on completion, the customer was delighted and the stitcher enjoyed the challenge.
If you have a tapestry that needs to be finished then please do get in touch and we'll be happy to quote you a price.
