Fine Cell Work
SPONSOR A PRISONER

Fine Cell Work's "Sponsor a Prisoner" scheme is intended to show prison inmates that members of the general public believe they are worth supporting, and that they should be given another chance. We are now offering 2 levels of Sponsorship and those wanting to take part can choose a medium or large geometric style cushion

The scheme gives members of the public the chance to obtain an original cushion hand-stitched by a prisoner. By commissioning the cushion you will sponsor the prisoner's training in a skill which will increase his or her hope, self-esteem and chances of going straight upon release.

Sponsorship is set at £50.00 for a 14" cushion and £100 for an 18" cushion. Both geometric in design, colours to be chosen by the stitcher.

Here are some little-known facts: 52% of male and 72% of female adult prisoners have no qualifications. 40% of prisoners under twenty-one have been in the care of the local authority in their childhoods - in the population as a whole the figure is only 2%. Half have serious problems with reading, two-thirds with numeracy and four-fifths with writing.

This is what Fine Cell Work has meant to one prisoner:

I am learning a new skill which I did not think possible. I also no that people do care about me and what I do because otherwise why would people take an interest in my fine cell work!

I now believe what others think about me makes a real difference to how I conduct myself. I have saved up over 800 pound from my Fine Cell Work and prison wages with encouragement from Caroline, Ginny and Officer Robertson. This money is a life saver for me because I can get accommodation upon discharge from prison!

Before coming to prison I lived in a tent in a London park! I now feel I can achieve things for myself and with hard work go forward to a better more productive life. My spelling and grammar may be far from perfect but I do hope you can see what a real difference you have made to my life.

Sponsorship can be for £50 or £100 for this amount you can :

"I will keep that letter forever"
    Inmate, HMP Albany

"Today I met a man who was released from prison last Friday, and is homeless as he has NOWHERE to sleep. He sleeps on benches. He signs on daily as he has no address. I was so cross, that I looked on the net for prison reform, prison support etc., and found your organisation. What touched me was that my mother used to do beautiful embroideries, patchwork, cushions etc., and somehow the two feelings combined to make me think "I must do something"
